This school year we are highlighting the newest members of the Board of Trustees. We have asked our new Trustees a series of questions to help the community get to know them a bit better. This month is Jessica Gibson Rosen.

Name:
Jessica Gibson Rosen

Occupation: Associate General Counsel at Amazon.com

QUESTION AND ANSWER

Why do you serve on The Bush School Board of Trustees?
Bush has taught my children to love learning. Because of their Bush experience, they deeply understand the importance of inquiry and the power of self-advocacy. I am forever thankful and want to give back to the school our family loves.

What are some of your goals and vision as a member of the board?
I want to ensure the elements that make Bush special continue while the school continuously improves.  One area of particular focus for me is maintaining and growing the neurodiversity at the school and continuing to develop the learning resources necessary to help those students thrive at Bush.

How has Bush changed your life or the life of your family?
My husband, Rob, and I are so thankful the Bush community welcomed our children and us as members. Bush is helping us develop our children into lifelong learners, which has always been our long-term mission as parents. Beyond the Bush community’s impact on our children, we have spent hours talking with other Bush parents on how to thoughtfully raise children in this very complicated time in history. Their input has helped us adapt our approach as we go.
What are you most passionate about at Bush?
Bush is a classic example of it taking a village to raise children and demonstrates the critical role that the village plays. I love our children's teachers and administrators and the care they take with them. They know them so well.

What excites you about the future of Bush as we move into the next 100 years of the school?
The continual upgrading of facilities and Methow Campus serving the next generation of learners engaged in experiential learning.

How would your kids describe you?
Playful, caring, nerdy, and a bit spacy.

Current favorite show/series on Netflix/Hulu/Prime?
I am committed to cozy mysteries and have just discovered "Brokenwood".

Favorite spot on the Bush campus and why?
I love the new Upper School (Upper School South) building as a sign of what is to come to the center campus.

Is there a Bush faculty or staff member that has inspired you and why?
While there are so many of Bush’s faculty and staff that inspire me, Mike Jackson (Middle School Faculty) has been such an important figure in two of my children’s lives (with the third on her way to him in the next few years). His creativity, enthusiasm, and love of kids and learning is infectious. I know that each of my kids will cite him as a pivotal force in their lives well into their adult-hood. Never underestimate the power a great teacher can have on your child’s life.

Favorite spot in Washington?
Our family enjoys Whidbey Island's Maxwelton beach on as many weekends as we can. It's our happy spot.

What is something people may not know about you?
I assigned my kids family summer reading this past summer. The book Grit, by Angela Duckworth, is a really terrific read for middle and upper school students.
