Upper School

Charting a PathToward a Life of Purpose

In Bush’s Upper School, students are called upon to ask questions, test out big ideas, make mistakes, seek out mentors, and create a more just, equitable, and sustainable world. Students develop skills as independent thinkers and collaborative learners through a combination of high academic expectations and signature experiential programming.

Independent Thinking

The Upper School prepares students exceptionally well for college and for life, inspiring involved, active citizens who want to make a difference in the world. At Bush, students are asked to participate actively in learning, communities, and the world because we believe deep learning takes place inside and outside the classroom. Students are called upon to consider the greater good and learn about themselves in relation to others.

Authentic Leadership

The best learning results from genuine connections between faculty and students. Through these critical relationships, students learn the art of collaborative work, independent research, advocacy, and authentic leadership.

ADVISORY PROGRAM

The Bush Upper School Advisory Program is designed to allow every student to build connections with a faculty member and eight to nine fellow students, from Ninth to Twelfth Grade, to whom they can turn for counsel about life at school and beyond. The advisor is present to help students with school matters, both academic and personal, and is the first person a parent/guardian should contact if there is a question about a student’s school experience. Advisory meets for fifty minutes each week on Thursday mornings. This weekly meeting includes announcements on upcoming events, individual check-ins on academic progress and wellness, group discussions about relevant topics and challenges facing our students, and cultural celebrations. Through advisory, we create a network of support and a sense of belonging for each Bush Upper School student.
